3 days riding and trekking through some of North Borneo’s
most dramatic scenery. Away from tourists’ route and info the heart of
this jungle paradise. Taking this tour on a mountain bike is one of the
purest ways to see and interact with this magnificent place. The mystique and
commanding presence of Mount Kinabalu throughout this ride provide a
vista that changes almost minute by minute and at the end of the third day
riders feel an intimate connection with one of the world’s most
unique mountains.
The fourth day of the trip is spent driving back to Kota Kinabalu.
DAY 1
We start our ride at Kinabalu Park HQ, with a
short cruise on the main road, downhill to our first turnoff onto gravel and
some gorgeous descent brings us to the sealed descent into the Kiau Valley.
We ride along beside the river with excellent views of the jungle-clad valley and
Mount Kinabalu.
We get to the end of the ride able trail and
put bikes onto the truck, from here we follow the river on foot for 5 km,
making a few crossing until we arrive at the paddy fields of Kampung Tambatuan,
this is our first night stay in the village community homestay,
comfortable dorm and a huge veranda facing the granite walls of the western
flanks of Mount Kinabalu. A sit-down dinner of pasta to chat through the
days thrills while the team service the bikes and get ready for the second days
adventure.
DAY 2
A full day in the saddle we head north on mostly gravel
roads for around 43km, stopping to swim in cool rivers and entertain the
bemused locals. There are lots of cool drinks supplied by the support by the
vehicle along the way.
We arrive at the second nights’ accommodation just
outside the town of Kota Belud in plenty of time to shower. Stretch
and maybe have a walk around the town before dinner at a hilltop restaurant
where we can watch the setting sun light up the north- west plateau of Mount Kinabalu and
its foothills with the ocean to the west. The hotel is comfortable and
has air conditioning.
DAY 3
30 km of riding on very scenic and quite hilly roads with
almost no traffic (but plenty of cows! ) and stunning views of the
northern gullies of Mount Kinabalu, including the infamous Low’s
Gully. The mountain of Tambuyukon, Sabah 3rd highest peak sits
in the foreground, forbidding in its jungle shroud.
We arrive at a small river where we will change from
riding kit into trekking kit and head past the final few houses on the edge of
the National Park to enter the pristine primary forest in order to cross the
mountain pass. Huge trees, bamboo stands and a unique opportunity to see the world’s oldest
rainforest far from any other tourists. Once over the pass we descend to the
village of Bambangan. Named after an odorous forest fruits and
the walk wide track some 6 km down to our final night camp, a big BBQ and some
well earned drinks.
This night we will stay in hammocks or tents beside the
river at a National Park Substation.
